Ash Barty to play in Icon Series golf event alongside Harry Kane, Michael Phelps

Less than a month after shocking the sporting world by announcing her immediate retirement from tennis, Ash Barty's next move has been revealed. 

The former world number one tennis star will feature in a golf event in New Jersey in June. 

The 25-year-old will play in the inaugural Icon Series, «a new concept in sport and entertainment», according to the event's website.

«Bringing together the world's most iconic athletes across multiple sports, the relentless competition will feature a 10-hole team match-play tournament format, unprecedented access for a global audience and showcase sporting stars like never before.»

The event will be held at the Liberty National Golf Club in Jersey City from June 30 to July 1, with a USA team to battle sporting stars from around the globe. 

Barty will line up in Team Rest of the World, which also features boxer Canelo Alvarez, footballer Harry Kane and Golf Hall of Famer Ernie Els, who will captain the team.

Team USA, which will be led by 1992 Masters champion Fred Couples, is set to feature Olympic swimming legend Michael Phelps, NFL stars Ben Roethlisberger and Michael Strahan, plus boxer Oscar de la Hoya.

Barty is a former ladies champion at her local golf club, Brookwater, and reportedly plays off a handicap of four at the course. 

Her fiancee Garry Kissick is a PGA trainee professional at the club. 

Barty won a weekend tournament at Brookwater just days after announcing her retirement. 

The 2021 Wimbledon champion refused to give details of her next career move when speaking the day after her shock announcement.
