Arsenal want Leeds wing Raphinha - and are hopeful Fabio Vieira signing will help seal the deal

Arsenal are hoping the £34 million signing of Fabio Vieira will help them land another of their main transfer targets, Raphinha, this summer.

Vieira and Raphinha are represented by the same agency, Gestifute, which is run by super-agent Jorge Mendes, and the smoothness of the negotiation to sign Vieira from Porto is regarded as a positive.

It is expected that Leeds United will demand a fee of £50m for Raphinha although they are yet to receive any offers and are insisting their priority – with Manchester City strongly interested in Kalvin Phillips – is to sign players rather than sell them after narrowly avoiding relegation from the Premier League. However, there is an expectation that both Phillips and Raphinha, who some sources claim might be signed for £45m, will leave.

Raphinha is represented by Deco, the former Barcelona and Chelsea midfielder, who works with Mendes. His agency brokered Vieira’s move to Arsenal last week with the signing of the 22-year-old attacking midfielder confirmed by Porto.

Although Raphinha’s aim is to join Barcelona, a deal appears unlikely given the state of the Spanish club’s finances and where their priorities lie. Their No 1 target remains trying to sign Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich.

Raphinha has been one of the most exciting wingers in the Premier League over the last two seasons and West Ham United failed in an attempt to sign him – they also bid for Phillips – in the January transfer window.

The 25 year-old can operate on either flank, although he has primarily been used on the right wing by Leeds. With Nicolas Pepe expected to leave Arsenal this summer, Raphinha would provide more depth and competition in the key wide positions in Mikel Arteta’s attack.
