Arsenal's top-four hopes in the balance as Edu toils over £99.5m double transfer deal
No Vlahovic. Ainsley Maitland-Niles has left leaving Arsenal light in midfield. Bruno Guimaraes looks closer to Newcastle than the Gunners. No signings made so far. This window cannot get any worse for us, can it?
How naive can we be sometimes as dedicated Arsenal supporters? There remain just five days of the window and the desperate need to add firepower to a side that failed to score against bottom of the league Burnley, has so far not been followed up with action.
Made worse by the fact that Arsenal’s two main top-four rivals Manchester United and Tottenham have looked improved under their new head coaches.
Yet, technical director Edu could soon see Mikel Arteta’s job made even tougher even if the Gunners don’t make any further signings. Not simply due to the fact that the Spaniard will continue onwards with the same group of players at present, but the improvement in the squads of their aforementioned opponents.
Newcastle look to be closing in on a deal for Bruno Guimaraes although Lyon have denied that a full agreement has yet been reached. The deal could still happen if the final details are sorted before the deadline.
The bid is reportedly around the €40 million (£33.5m) figure. Arsenal have tracked the Brazilian since his days in his homeland with Athletico Paranaense. Lyon beat the Gunners to the midfielder in 2020 and again they could look to miss out on him.
However, the more worrying news is coming from much closer to home. Tottenham have had a £37.6 million bid for Porto winger Luis Diaz rejected, reports The Guardian.
The Colombian has a £66 million release clause but Spurs are said to be willing to go as high as £46 million including bonuses.
