Arsenal duo beat out Odegaard and Miedema to win Player of the Season awards

Bukayo Saka and Beth Mead have been named Arsenal’s Player of the Season for the men’s and women’s teams respectively. 

In the men’s team vote, Norway’s Martin Odegaard took second place, while goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale came third. 

Meanwhile, Mead finished ahead of fellow forward Vivianne Miedema. The Dutch striker ended up second in the Women’s Super League scoring charts, but it was the English star who impressed Gunners fans the most. 

Similarly to last season, Saka put in a number of impressive, eye-catching performances across the campaign. 

The 20-year-old was the men’s top scorer last season –– finishing with 12 goals and providing seven assists in all competitions. 

Saka scored crucial goals against three of the big six, including Tottenham, Chelsea and Manchester United. 

The talented youngster is clearly a fan favourite at the Gunners and has become the first Arsenal player to retain the Player of the Season award since Thierry Henry in 2004. 

He is also just the fourth person in the club’s history to scoop the honour twice in a row, after Henry, Ian Wright and Liam Brady. 

At the start of the season, Mead’s spot in the side appeared to be in jeopardy. Arsenal, who had signed both Mana Iwabuchi and Nikita Parris, were blessed with a plethora of attacking options at their disposal, and many assumed that Mead may make way. 

However, the English forward scored twice against Chelsea on the opening weekend of the campaign and has taken her game to new heights ever since. 

Under the tutelage of Jonas Eidevall, Mead produced a string of world-class performances for the Gunners, though the team ultimately finished second in the WSL.
