Mikel Arteta on whether Wolves are rivals to Arsenal in the top four race

Arsenal have confirmed why Emile Smith Rowe and Takehiro Tomiyasu will miss tonight's Premier League clash against Wolves.

The Gunners host Bruno Lage's side to the Emirates Stadium two weeks after securing a crucial 1-0 win at Molineux thanks to a first-half strike from Brazilian defender Gabriel Magalhaes.

Mikel Arteta named his starting line-up for the must-win match in north London, with Smith Rowe and Tomiyasu both absent from the matchday squad because of illness and injury respectively.

A club statement read: "Smith Rowe (sickness, not Covid) and Tomiyasu (calf) both miss tonight's squad. Back soon, lads."

The Hale End academy graduate has been in sublime form recently, netting nine Premier League goals, more than any other Arsenal player this term.

However, he has been in and out of the starting XI, with Brazilian attacker Gabriel Martinelli being favoured on the left flank in recent times but Arteta has admitted he would like to play them both together when fully fit.

“They have played together - Emile played as a left attacking midfielder, which is another position he can play,” the Spaniard said before the Wolves match.

“I am tempted (to play them together), yes, because they want to play and when you see players training and playing the way they do, you want to throw them all on the pitch. Unfortunately, 11 is the limit.”
