Arsenal 'close' to agreeing long-term contract with prolific academy wonderkid

Arsenal are edging closer to tying down academy star Khayon Edwards to a professional contract in north London.

The teenage sensation has been involved in talks over his future with the Gunners for months amid interest from elsewhere. Edwards has been a star in the youth ranks and is now close to penning a pro deal at the Emirates. The 18-year-old is currently on a scholarship deal that will expire when the season ends.

Edwards has the same agent as Bukayo Saka, who Arsenal are also looking to tie down to an improved deal, and football.london report a deal is close to being finalised that will see the teenager remain in north London. Chelsea, Leeds and Newcastle were among those eyeing Edwards.

Edwards has scored 17 goals for the club's youth ranks this term with the majority of his goals coming for the U18 side. He has notched 16 times in as many outings for the U18s whilst also laying on a further six assists. The teenager is one of several youngsters at the club currently holding discussions over a new deal.

Academy boss Per Mertesacker recently opened up on his vision to build a "Strong Young Gunners" as he explained explained: "I think it was formulated four years ago, in my last season as a player. I came up with a framework of what I believe, from my own experience and also by talking to people.

"Strong Young Gunners means this is our vision where we want our players to stand strong in every scenario they will face. We are passionate about creating youngsters who can rise to any challenge and we have a rich history and heritage we want to pay tribute to and carry on."
