Antony’s latest comments show why Erik ten Hag brought him to Manchester United

Erik ten Hag has made it very clear what he expects from his players at Manchester United.

“I have high expectations from myself and that is also what I demand from my squad,” he said in his first interview as Reds boss. “They have to co-operate together and they have to give every day their best.

“And I would say, for me, good is not good enough. We have to do better. I have high demands on my players. I expect them to fight and give 100 per cent.”

It’s an ethos that carried Ajax to three Eredivisie titles and one he is trying to instil back into United. Towards the end of last season, players were accused of not putting in maximum effort which led to scathing reviews.

Fingers on the outside were pointed in many directions but Ten Hag is trying to make sure there isn’t a reason to do so on his watch. One thing you cannot accuse United of this season is a lack of commitment.

Defeats against the likes of Real Sociedad and Manchester City were poor but it wasn’t for a lack of effort. This purposeful mindset has been aided by the signings Ten Hag has brought in over the summer.
