Antonio Rüdiger racially abused by fans after Real Madrid victory at Cádiz

The Real Madrid defender Antonio Rüdiger was racially abused by fans after the team’s La Liga game at Cádiz on Saturday evening.

Video posted by Spanish media on Sunday showed Cádiz fans hurling abuse at Rüdiger after he went to the stands to give his shirt to someone in the crowd. Objects were also thrown at the German international following Real Madrid’s 2-0 victory.

Rüdiger exchanged a few words with some of the fans yelling at him before giving his shirt away and saluting some of the supporters. Two people who appeared to be members of Real Madrid’s staff came over to lead the player away from the fans.

Spanish football has been marred by racial abuse this season with Rüdiger’s teammate, Vinícius Júnior, having been targeted during several matches. Earlier this month, the Brazilian forward testified against a Mallorca fan who was accused of calling him a monkey during a match.

The same fan was also accused of aiming abuse at the Villarreal winger Samu Chukwueze during another league match. Elsewhere, Real Valladolid recently suspended 12 season-ticket holders while investigating alleged verbal abuse of Vinícius during a game.

The Spanish league has filed several formal complaints to authorities over insults against the Brazilian winger, but some have already been shelved. The league also recently increased the number of monitors at Madrid matches to identify perpetrators.

In December, following the abuse he received at Valladolid, Vinícius accused La Liga of “doing nothing” to stamp out racist abuse at matches. The president of the Spanish league, Javier Tebas, responded by labelling his claims as “unfair and untrue”.

The first trial against an individual for racially abusing a player in Spain is expected to begin
