Antonio Conte believes a “miracle” top-four finish is Tottenham's best hope of keeping Harry Kane next season.
But he still fears Manchester United – a “monster in football” just a point behind them - will finish strongly and deny Spurs their best-case scenario after a turbulent campaign. Spurs have surged back into contention for Champions League football next season by winning four of their last five games.
Conte hopes the carrot of playing against Europe's elite, as meaningful preparation for England's World Cup campaign in Qatar, might be enough for Kane to stay at Tottenham instead of him risking the upheaval of a big-money move this summer.
The England captain's proposed £120 million move to Manchester City last August was vetoed by Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy, and Spurs are bracing themselves for more brinkmanship in the market if their late charge falls short of a Champions League place. Spurs' best run of the season will be tested against resurgent Newcastle on Sunday with Kane – seven goals in as many games for his club – back at full throttle.
