Anthony Martial has exactly what he needs to try and save his Manchester United career vs Wolves

After starting Sunday's 1-0 defeat to West Ham United on the bench, Anthony Martial will be hoping to wrestle his place back when Manchester United face Wolves at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.

Erik ten Hag, just 72 hours after watching his side lose 1-0 to Brighton & Hove Albion, decided to make three changes, one of which saw Martial axed from the starting line-up in place of January recruit Wout Weghorst. The Dutchman's inclusion meant a tactical rejig with him taking up residency in the attacking-midfield berth, Bruno Fernandes deployed out wide and Marcus Rashford tasked with operating through the middle.

It was, of course, a gamble that failed to pay off as United fired a blank in front of goal for the second game running. Weghorst, despite offering glimpses of his uses in the No.10 position during the 2-2 draw with Barcelona in the Camp Nou back in February, is not at the standard expected of a United player.

He is slow, limited in possession and carries next to no goal threat. Martial, though he has hardly set the world alight in recent seasons, is a much more mobile and penetrative operator, meaning his fluidity could come into its own against Wolves, who will no doubt sit deep and attempt to catch United on the break.

Should Ten Hag select Martial, offering him a recall to the starting line-up, not only would it mark his first Premier League start at Old Trafford since the 2-1 derby day win over Manchester City back in January, but it could also mark the beginning of a five-game audition period for the Frenchman to save his United career.
