Andy Lyons strikes in extra-time as Shamrock Rovers edge out Drogheda in FAI Cup
Andy Lyons grabbed a late winner for the second time in the space of just three days as Shamrock Rovers maintained their quest for a league and cup double with victory over Drogheda United.
United brought the game to extra-time courtesy of Dean Williams' second-half equaliser, cancelling out Sean Gannon’s early goal.
The hosts had fully earned the draw after 90 minutes, ending the game in the ascendency as Rovers’ eight-week European exploits looked to be taking their toll.
However, after an uneventful first 15 minutes of extra-time, the team from Tallaght produced the necessary quality to win the game and progress to the last eight.
Sub Justin Ferizaj certainly played his part but Lyons’ eight goal of a continually eye-catching season sealed it.
