Andrew Coscoran breaks long-standing Irish 1500m record in Nice

Andrew Coscoran has broken Ray Flynn's long-standing 1500m national record with a blistering run in Nice.

The 26-year-old ran 3:32.68 to take nearly a second off Flynn’s time of 3:33.5 set in Oslo in 1982.

The Balbriggan man raced superbly to take the win, settling in behind New Zealand's Samuel Tanner from the bell, before unleashing a race-winning-kick down the home straight.

He held off the fast-finishing Niels Laros of the Netherlands, who also claimed a national record.

It wasn’t the only Irish record to fall in the race, with Nick Griggs setting a new standard for Under-20 level with a time of 3:36:09 in finishing ninth.
