Andrew Conway out for up to four months after knee setback

Munster's Andrew Conway has had a further setback with his recovery from a long-term knee injury and could potentially miss the rest of the season.

The wing hasn't played yet this season after undergoing knee surgery last summer, with the province confirming on Wednesday morning that he is set to be sidelined for a further three to four months after having an additional procedure last week.

The Ireland international had been struggling with his knee for several months prior to his first operation. The 31-year-old first picked up the knock in February of 2022, before aggravating it in Ireland's Six Nations win against England at Twickenham in March.

While he returned to action for Munster in May, the issue still caused him to undergo surgery.

It had been hoped that Conway could have returned as early as October this season but after a series of setbacks he has undergone a further operation.

It's a cruel blow for the 30-cap Ireland international, who had been a consistent selection on the right wing by head coach Andy Farrell when fit, and leaves him with very little time to make an impact for potential Rugby World Cup selection.

In better news for Munster, RG Snyman has increased his training load as he edges closer to a return from his own long-term knee issues.

The Springbok World Cup winner has been sidelined for the last 16 months after suffering a second successive anterior cruciate ligament injury in October 2021.

However, the 28-year-old has progressed to on-field training in the last four weeks, and appears on course to return to action in the coming month.

The province return to action in the BKT United Rugby Championship when they welcome the Ospreys to Thomond Park on Friday 17 February.
