Ambulance on 999 callout in crash with Mercedes outside pub

An ambulance responding to a call was involved in a crash with another vehicle on Sunday afternoon (April 10). The incident happened outside the George and Dragon pub, Heaton Chapel, at around 3.30pm.

The incident involved a St John ambulance vehicle and a silver Mercedes at the crossroads junction where Manchester Road (A6188) meets School Lane (B5169). It was later confirmed that the ambulance was not carrying any patients when the crash happened, but was driving at speed on its way to an incident, with its blue emergency lights on.

An onlooker said that the smash happened as the car was turning right in the yellow box junction onto Manchester Road. Both vehicles remained at the site for quite some time, with Greater Manchester Police also in attendance. Debris filled the road as traffic was slowed down as it passed the incident.

City fans who were drinking at the George and Dragon pub watching the match against Liverpool spilled out into the streets to watch the aftermath. Police arrived at the scene shortly after to make enquiries with cars having to swerve around the incident.

A witness said the paramedic immediately rushed out of the ambulance to check on the welfare of the Mercedes driver. St John Ambulance also confirmed that there were no reported injuries in the smash. A spokesperson said: "One of our ambulances was involved in a collision while responding to a call. No patient on board at the time and no injuries." Greater Manchester Police have also been contacted for more information.
