Amateur Nick Dunlap wins PGA Tour's The American Express - ESPN
University of Alabama sophomore Nick Dunlap prevailed at The American Express on Sunday in La Quinta, California, becoming the first amateur to win on the PGA Tour since Phil Mickelson in 1991.
Dunlap held a three-shot lead entering the final round and closed things out with a 2-under 70 to edge Christiaan Bezuidenhout by 1 shot. He finished at 29 under overall.
The 20-year-old became the eighth amateur to win on the PGA Tour since 1945. Mickelson won the Tucson Open in 1991 as a 20-year-old Arizona State junior.
Mickelson took to social media to commend Dunlap for the performance, one of several pros who hailed the accomplishment:
