'Almighty bang' as passengers 'thrown forwards' from their seats in major bus pile up with two in hospital

Bus passengers heard an 'almighty bang' before others were 'thrown forward' from their seats in a major four-vehicle pile up near Newton Heath on Tuesday (September 10).

Police, fire crews and paramedics were called to the collision on Oldham Road, near the junction with Dean Lane. Two buses and two HGVs had smashed into one another, leaving one of the Bee Network vehicles with a completely smashed windscreen and rear window.

Passengers on board described being 'thrown forwards' from their seats, after the bus became wedged between another bus and a truck in front. A child was also reportedly launched from their seat.

One passenger, Steven Moors, caught the bus to head into the city centre to do some shopping when the crash occurred at around 11.35am.

"We got on at the Lamb Inn in Failsworth to go to Manchester for a bit of shopping. As the bus was slowing down coming up to stationary traffic at the lights, there was an almighty bang from the rear of the bus, then another bang at the front.

"We were both thrown forward and back, banging the back of our heads on the head rest. It happened so fast. A child on the bus was thrown from their seat.

"We were hit by another bus from behind, which pushed us into a truck in front, which was then sandwiched between the bus and another truck, causing a four-vehicle pile up."

Pictures from the scene show the rear window of the 83 bus service completely smashed, with the front windscreen also left a wreck after it was ploughed into the back of a stationary truck.
