Ally McCoist backs Brendan Rodgers stance amid Leicester City transition
Leicester City have been backed to emerge stronger from their "transitional period" by pundit Ally McCoist.
Compared to recent seasons, which have produced successive fifth-place finishes and an FA Cup triumph, it has been an underwhelming campaign for the Foxes. Sunday’s 2-1 win over Brentford left Brendan Rodgers’ side 10th in the table, behind Aston Villa on goal difference. Realistically, ninth place is the best City can hope for, although they could still end the season with silverware after reaching the quarter-finals of the Europa Conference League.
Questions have been raised by Rodgers’ future in some quarters, but Scotland and Rangers legend McCoist believes City are well-placed to move up the table next season under the former Celtic boss.
“It is a transitional period,” said McCoist on talkSPORT this morning (Monday). “Brendan’s interview [after the Brentford game] was great. The boy suggested that Leicester were doing fine, they’re doing all right and Brendan was like ‘we don’t want to be just all right’. I get where he’s coming from.
“They’re having a season where they’re taking one or two steps back from where they’ve been to take one or two steps forward. They’ve taken a wee step back to reassess themselves, to regroup.
“Like a lot of clubs, they’ve had a tough time with injuries to key players. But they’ll be absolutely fine and I expect them to progress next season with Brendan.”
