All the Greater Manchester MPs at the top of the new Labour government

The new Labour government is taking shape with 10 Greater Manchester MPs given top jobs.

Four members of Keir Starmer's cabinet represent constituencies in Greater Manchester. This includes Ashton-under-Lyne MP Angela Rayner, who is the Deputy Prime Minister and Stalybridge and Hyde MP Jonathan Reynolds who is the Business and Trade Secretary.

Wigan MP Lisa Nandy, who was the Shadow International Development Minister before the general election, has also been appointed to Sir Keir's cabinet as the Culture, Media and Sport Secretary. Manchester Central MP Lucy Powell - who went to the same south Manchester school as Ms Nandy - is the Leaders of the House Commons and the presiding officer of the prestigious Privy Council.

This week, several other Greater Manchester MPs have been given other government jobs as more junior ministers. Some have been appointed as ministers of state, while others will serve as Parliamentary Under-Secretaries of State which is the lowest tier of minister.

Two Greater Manchester MPs will work as government whips, responsible for making sure MPs vote and enforcing party discipline. This includes Bury South's former Conservative MP Christian Wakeford who defected to Labour in 2022 and was re-elected last week.

All of Tameside's MPs now have government jobs with two serving in the cabinet. Three Manchester MPs are also now ministers.
