All the confirmed UK bank holidays for 2022 and 2023

The dates of the eight bank holidays for next year are now confirmed. Bank holidays are a national public holiday in the United Kingdom, Ireland and the Crown dependencies.

The term refers to all public holidays in the UK and they can either be held under common law or declared by royal proclamation. They are spread out across the calendar and include certain seasonal events such as Christmas, Easter and the New Year. On bank holidays most shops shut, schools will close, places of business generally shut down and public transport is reduced.

In England and Wales there are two bank holidays left this calendar year, those for Christmas Day and Boxing Day. When a bank holiday occasion falls on a weekend a ‘substitute’ weekday becomes a bank holiday, normally the following Monday, to ensure workers get an extra day off.

This year Christmas Day falls on a Sunday so as well as Boxing Day, Monday December 26, being a bank holiday one will also be held on Tuesday, December 27 as a substitute for Christmas Day.

That is also the case for the first bank holiday of 2023, with Monday, January 2 being declared a substitute day for New Year's Day which also falls on a Sunday.

Easter is this year being celebrated in early April with, as is tradition, both Good Friday and Easter Monday, on April 7 and April 10 repsectively, being bank holidays,

There will be two bank holidays at the beginning and end of May, May 1 and May 29 to be exact, and one on August 28 before next year's festive period where both Christmas Day and Boxing Day fall on weekdays.
