Alex Neil makes admission over his Sunderland future

Sunderland boss Alex Neil has admitted to The Northern Echo that he needs to focus on the short term rather than his long term future at present with the Black Cats.

The North East outfit are currently going through a mini slump in form in Sky Bet League One and are in danger of seeing their promotion bid go completely off the rails.

Neil is yet to have picked up a victory since taking over the top job at the Stadium of Light from Lee Johnson earlier in the month and will no doubt be frustrated by what he has seen from the squad that he has inherited.

Now the former Norwich City and Preston North End manager has spoken out about how he is focusing on short term gains rather than his long term vision for the club:

“If we’re being really honest, I think most managers like to talk about the long-term when they come into a club because they’re trying to buy themselves time.

“That’s it in a nutshell. But the simple fact is that unless you win in the short term, there is no long term.”

The Sunderland head coach will know all too well that he needs to start getting wins under his belt otherwise the expectant fanbase will inevitably turn against him.

Neil’s men host Burton Albion tonight at the Stadium of Light in League One.

The Verdict

The new man in charge of the Black Cats is certainly starting to realise just how tough a job he has on his hands moving forwards after a rough start to his tenure.

They simply have to win against Burton tonight to get their confidence back otherwise they could be cut adrift by the other clubs around them.

It’s something that is easier said than done but the situation for Neil really is that simple.

If he doesn’t get them promoted this season, he is at serious risk of losing his job.
