Alan Shearer reacts to Newcastle media team’s dig at Erik ten Hag following win vs Man United

Alan Shearer showed his approval for Newcastle United’s social media team taking a quick dig at Erik ten Hag following their 2-0 win over Manchester United on Sunday.

Headers from Joe Willock and Callum Wilson saw the Magpies leapfrog United into third on goal difference with the visitors in danger of dropping out of the top four should Tottenham beat Everton on Monday night.

In the build-up to the clash, Ten Hag’s comments on Newcastle’s time-wasting tactics ahead of February’s Carabao Cup final win resurfaced. “We know they delay, yeah,” he said at the time.

“The referees want to play effective time. [Newcastle] have the lowest in the league and they are quite successful with it. So, it’s up to us that we get speed in the game but also we are then dependent on the refereeing as well.”

Eddie Howe hit back at this suggestion in his post-match press conference on Sunday, arguing: “I want to make one thing very clear: We want the ball in play. We play a quick game.

“I don’t get where this time-wasting nonsense has come from, because it’s not us. I’ll always stand up for my team and what I believe is right.

“If something is not accurate, then naturally you want to put the right point across. We want the ball in play – that’s the type of team we are.”

Newcastle’s Twitter admin had earlier posted a quip about Ten Hag’s time-wasting suggestions shortly after full-time. “No time-wasting required…” said the tweet, which prompted Shearer to respond with a plethora of laughing and hand-clapping emojis.

He later tweeted: “Could/Should have been 7-0!! Oh I’ve cheered up”, again, with a series of laughing emojis.
