Ager Aketxe: Eibar man scores wondergoal in La Liga promotion play-offs

Ager Aketxe has scored an absolutely incredible goal in the La Liga play-offs that could be a serious contender for the Puskas Award.

Eibar travelled to Girona yesterday for the first leg of their La Liga play-off semi-final.

The travelling team narrowly missed out on automatic promotion by a mere point, whilst Girona snuck into the final play-off qualification spot thanks to having more wins than their equally ranked competitor, Oviedo.

It was a close fought affair with little to split the two teams, both of whom hit the woodwork on one occasion in the match.

Eibar racked up a staggering seven yellow cards as they put in a fierce defensive performance at the Estadi Montilivi, limiting Girona to just a single shot on target at their home stadium.

It was a game plan worthy of the tactical master Jose Mourinho himself. The team had just 34% possession across the 90 minutes but still remained an attacking threat, mustering 80% of the shots on target in the match.

Eibar ran out 1-0 winners on the day and will take their narrow advantage into the second half of the tie, but despite their solid team effort, their victory is courtesy of one man only – Aketxe

In the 27th minute, Eibar took a quick free-kick 40-yards out from Girona’s goal, seemingly harmlessly nudging the ball to their 28-year-old attacking midfielder Aketxe.

We say ‘seemingly harmless’ because the idea that Aketxe scored from this range is simply ludicrous.

The Spaniard took one touch to knock the ball onto his left foot, ran onto it and let loose an absolute wonder-strike into the top corner.

It might just be the best goal we’ve seen all year and ought to be well in contention for the Puskas Award. Check it out below:

It’s even better from the second
