AFLW round-up: Tough outing for Freemantle trio as Wall and O'Shea impress in defeat

It was a night to forget for Freemantle's Irish trio Orlagh Lally, Áine Tighe and Amy Mulholland as the side managed only a single behind in their 29-1 loss to Geelong at the Fremantle Community Bank Oval.

It was the side’s lowest ever tally in the AFLW, with Mim Strom grabbing their only score in difficult conditions. Despite the defeat, Tighe was one of the home side’s best players with 11 disposals and five marks.

On Friday night, Vikki Wall and Erika O’Shea caught the eye in front of a big crowd at the MCG, but their North Melbourne side lost 26-24 to Melbourne.

Over 18,000 were in attendance with Meath’s Wall having five tackles and five possessions and O’Shea four tackles and 11 possessions.

"Two games in and North Melbourne's Irish duo of Vikki Wall and Erika O'Shea look like they were made to play AFLW," the club’s website said.

"Many Irish players take some time to get used to the physicality in the league, but against Melbourne, Wall and O'Shea put their bodies on the line to impact the play, and then turned on the jets. The Roos have found a couple of stars."

Rachel Kearns remains a long-term absentee for the victors after undergoing shoulder surgery earlier this week.

Niamh Kelly was omitted and Ailish Considine was out with injury for Adelaide’s 36-27 win over Richmond, while Western Bulldogs were 28-9 winners against Port Adelaide.

On Sunday, Orla O’Dwyer [Brisbane], Sarah Rowe, Aishling Sheridan [both Collingwood], Joanne Doonan [Essendon], Clara Fitzpatrick [St Kilda], Aisling McCarthy [West Coast Eagles], Brid Stack and Cora Staunton [both GWS Giants] are due to be in action.

Megan Ryan is on the emergency list for the Bombers against Carlton.
