AFF Cup 2020 Final; Indonesia Wishes for Miracle as Happened in 2004

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian national football team will face the second leg match of the 2020 AFF Cup final against Thailand on Saturday, January 1, 2022. Lost at 0-4, the Garuda squad wished for a miracle as happened back in 2004.

In the first leg of the final match last Wednesday, Asnawi Mangkualam and the team were defeated 0-4 by Thailand. However, coach Shin Tae-yong said they will not give up and attempt to win the champion title in the upcoming match.

“The ball is round. We have to work hard for the second leg. We know that we have the support of the fans. For them, we want to get a good result,” said the South Korean coach after Wednesday's match.

Although many people expressed pessimism that Indonesia could turn things around in the second leg match, there were a number of miracles in the history of the AFF Cup.

One of them happened in 2004. Indonesia met Malaysia in the two-legged semifinal match of AFF Cup 2004. In the first leg match held at the Bung Karno Stadium, Indonesia lost 1-2 to Malaysia. However in the final leg, Indonesia won a dramatic victory with a score of 4-1 or 5-3 aggregate over Malaysia.
