Aaron Opoku given crazy red card in Hamburg 1-2 Darmstadt

Hamburg winger, Aaron Opoku, picked up one of the craziest red cards of the season in his side’s 2. Bundesliga clash with Darmstadt on Friday evening.

Darmstadt took a two-goal lead after just seven minutes played thanks to goals from Patric Pfeiffer and Phillip Tietz.

Opoku started the match on the bench and was subbed on in the second half with the hopes that he could change the game.

However, he was on the pitch for just eight minutes after being sent off in cynical fashion.

Hamburg were on the break after Opuku, who had already picked up a yellow card, beat two players in the centre of the park.

In a desperate attempt to break up the counter, Fabian Holland grabbed Opoku’s shorts and prevented him from joining the attack.

That’s when Opoku lost it.

After failing to shake off Holland, the 23-year-old lashed out and booted his opponent straight in the stomach.

The referee saw the whole incident unfold and stopped play immediately. He proceeded to jog over to Opoku and give him his marching orders.

It was a crazy red card and you can watch it below…

Madness.

You can understand Opoku’s frustration – Holland’s foul was cynical and prevented him from getting forward.

But you just cannot react like that. There was only going to be one outcome as soon as he retaliated.

What makes it even worse is the fact Darmstadt were already down to 10 men themselves, with Klaus Gjasula being sent off moments before Opoku.

The incident is being widely shared on Reddit with many fans given their thoughts. View some reaction below…

Opoku’s red card was one of three in the game.

Hamburg managed to pull a goal back in the 87th minute through
