A well-fed O'Shea will be dangerous for Mayo - Keegan

Kevin McStay has finally kept Aidan O'Shea in his best position and Mayo are reaping the benefits, according to former Mayo star, Lee Keegan.

McStay has sited O’Shea on the edge of the square in the No14 jersey and, crucially says Keegan, provided him with the kind of service that can help him do damage in this year’s All-Ireland series.

Mayo ended Kerry’s 38-game unbeaten Championship run at home when they had five points to spare at Fitzgerald Stadium. O’Shea may not have scored from play, but popped over a pair of frees and one offensive mark while generally occupying the whole of the Kingdom fullback line.

The O’Shea conundrum has been an unanswered question for several seasons as Mayo continue their quest for that illusive Sam Maguire.

Keegan laid in out plainly, rather than have O’Shea dropping out the field to chase more mobile 'middle-eight’ players, the only place for the veteran attacker is on the edge of the opposition’s square with plenty of ammunition sent his way.

"They’re actually kicking him the ball," Keegan pointed out on RTÉ’s The Saturday Game. "He’s been crying out for ball for years and we persisted with a running game for years. A better quality of ball.

"Today was different to Roscommon. He had the reverse role against Roscommon, where he didn’t get that kind of ball because of the packed defence. But today was wide open spaces for him and he was a huge focal point for Mayo today in everything they did well in attack.
