A TV meltdown, Twitter tantrums, a trophy and some grim days - Erik ten Hag's 100 Manchester United games will feel like a lifetime

Act one, scene one: Erik ten Hag stares into the middle distance on a boiling hot day in west London. In front of him, a barely recognisable football team in a sickly shade of green are being embarrassed once again. "You're not fit to wear the shirt," rains down from the away end as Brentford win 4-0. Manchester United are still broken.

Act one, scene two: Cristiano Ronaldo is walking towards the tunnel at Old Trafford. The game isn't over, but the game is up for Ronaldo. He has refused to come on against Tottenham and has upped the ante in his fight with Ten Hag, a fight that, on this occasion, was only ever going to produce one winner. United win for the ninth time in 12 games and the new manager seems to have a grip on things.

Act one, scene three: A 53-year-old Dutchman is dancing on the pitch at Wembley. Another Dutchman with endless enthusiasm but limited ability is staring at the fans in front of him, barely able to comprehend the fact that he has just won a trophy with Manchester United, the club's first in six years. Newcastle have been vanquished at Wembley just three days after Barcelona were beaten at Old Trafford. Twenty-nine of the last 38 games have been won and this football team seems like the real deal.

Act two, scene one: The Anfield scoreboard stands out like a beacon in the darkness. Somehow those LED lights appear to be displaying 'Liverpool 7 Manchester United 0'. A team with unstoppable momentum have been humiliated by one that looked to be falling apart at the seams. Post-game Ten Hag says the performance was "unprofessional".
