A stolen car smashed into my home, it's now a wreck and I don't have insurance

A care worker who was on the cusp of selling his house has had his plans left in tatters after men driving a stolen car smashed into his living room.

Emergency services descended on Harrop Street in Abbey Hey at around 6.15am today (January 25) following reports of a stolen car, which had careered into a nearby property. Police believe it had been stolen from Butterton Drive, just half a mile away.

Only the owner, 43-year-old Ibrar Hussain, was present in the house at the time - and he was miraculously unhurt.

"There was a big bang," he told the Manchester Evening News. "I thought it could have been the storm or something falling on the roof. The whole house shook like there'd been an earthquake.

"I looked out of the window and shouted for help. Then I looked down and saw the car inside my house, saw two guys smash its windows, jump out and run off in opposite directions.

"The police car was right behind them - the officer jumped out and followed one of them and managed to catch them after a few yards. But I don't know about the other one."

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "A 19-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of burglary and several driving offences, after a car was reported stolen from an address on Butterton Drive and subsequently crashed into a property on Harrop Street shortly before 6.15am today (Saturday, January 25 2025).

"Another man is thought to have fled from the scene and we are actively pursuing enquiries to identify and locate this individual. Thankfully no-one was reported injured in the collision, however significant damage was caused to the property."
