4 SA golfers make Open Championship cut, amateur Lamprecht set to win Silver Medal

Only four of the 10 South African golfers who started the Open Championship at Royal Liverpool made the weekend cut.

After the completion of Friday's second round, Thriston Lawrence was the best-placed South African at one-under par and tied for 11th position. He is nine shots behind American leader Brian Harman, who boasts a five-shot lead at the top.

Louis Oosthuizen and Christiaan Bezuidenhout are two-over par and share tied for 39th position.

Amateur Christo Lamprecht, who was a surprise co-leader after shooting five-under 66 on the opening day, struggled with an eight-over 79 on Friday. He now sits tied for 62nd but it was just enough to make the weekend cut.

Lamprecht, 22, is the sole amateur to make the cut which means he will win the Silver Medal on Sunday. He will become the first South African to scoop this prestigious accolade.

Lamprecht was one of six amateurs in the field and he finished two shots clear of 19-year-old Spaniard Jose Luis Ballester Barrio and four clear of Argentina's Mateo Fernandez de Oliveira.

Tiger Christensen (+9), Alex Maguire (+10) and Harrison Crowe (+14) were the other amateurs competing.

The six other remaining South Africans - Charl Schwartzel (+7), Ockie Strydom (+7), Ernie Els (+10), Branden Grace (+10), Martin Rohwer (+13) and Kyle Barker (+14) - all missed the cut.
