4 athletes break sub-4 minute mile barrier at Green Point Stadium

Four elite athletes have broken sub-four minute barrier at the Under Armour 'All Out Mile' event at Green Point Athletics Stadium on Wednesday.

Elite athletes, novice runners and several sports personalities took part in the iconic mile (1.6km) distance in celebration of Global Running Day.

20-year-old upcoming star and 800m star Prudence Sekgodiso won the Women's Elite race in 04:43.17.

Sekgodiso used this event as preparation for the Morocco Diamond League in Rabat as she also eyes a Commonwealth Games debut in July.

Meanwhile, in the Men's Elite race, four athletes broke the sub-four minute barrier with former Comrades Marathon winner Justin Kemboi from Kenya, crossing the finish line first.

Kemboi snatched a photo finish victory as he and fellow countryman Matthew Kipsang ran in 03:59.02.

Rounding up the podium was South Africa's Ashley Smith, who ran a time of 03:59.86 and Christopher Swart also breaking sub-four in 03:59.98.

Olympian and Commonwealth Games athlete Elroy Gelant also took part in the Men's Elite, finishing sixth in 04:01.26.

The men’s world record stands at 3:43.13, set by Hicham El Guerrouj of Morocco in 1999 while the women’s record sits at 4:12.33 held by Olympic sensation Sifan Hassan, set in July 2019.
