3 young athletes among those killed in Barrie car crash, sports leagues confirm

Three young athletes were among the six people killed in a devastating car crash on a closed road in Barrie last weekend, local sports organizations confirmed Monday.

The Barrie Minor Lacrosse Association and Simcoe County Football have identified Luke West, Curtis King and River Wells as being among those who died. One more man and two women —  all believed to be in their 20s — were also killed after the crash, which took place in the south end of Barrie, about an hour north of Toronto.

Barrie police are still investigating the circumstances of the fatal single-vehicle collision and aren't providing any other information at this time, including who the victims are or how they may have known one another.   

But information circulating on social media have provided a glimpse into who the victims were. 

Luke West was a lacrosse player and coach who played the sport almost his entire life, according to the Bombers Jr. C Lacrosse Club,

"We love you, we miss you, and we are grateful for the time that we had with you," reads a Twitter statement from club.

According to Simcoe County Football, Curtis King and River Wells were former athletes who played for the Innisdale Invaders and Barrie North Vikings. 

Two separate online fundraisers have been established for the King and Wells families, which have both garnered thousands of dollars as of Monday morning.

"We not only remember these great athletes for what they did on the field, but remember the great people they were in life," reads an Instagram post from the football league.
