3 things we clearly learnt about Birmingham City after their 2-1 defeat to Reading

Birmingham City would have been hoping to secure a positive result in their showdown with Reading last night after picking up four points from their last two Championship fixtures.

However, despite showing glimpses of promise during this fixture, the Blues suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of the Royals at the Select Car Leasing Stadium.

Lucas Joao opened the scoring for Reading in the 67th minute of the clash as he fired past Birmingham goalkeeper Neil Etheridge.

John Swift then doubled his side’s advantage from the penalty spot after Andy Yiadom was brought down in the area by Onel Hernandez.

Although Birmingham did manage to pull a goal back in the 82nd minute, they were unable to find an equaliser in the closing stages of the fixture.

Lyle Taylor was denied by goalkeeper Karl Hein whilst Jeremie Bela hit an effort over the bar.

Jordan James’ strike was then saved by Hein with Taylor unable to convert the rebound.

After an own-goal from Tom McIntyre provided Birmingham with some hope, Hernandez fired narrowly over the bar.

As a result of their failure to be ruthless in-front of goal, Bowyer’s side slipped to a disappointing defeat.

In order to pick up positive results on a regular basis between now and the end of the season, Birmingham will need to make improvements in this particular area.
