2 clear trends we’re seeing with Blackburn Rovers at the moment – Do you agree?

Blackburn Rovers have loosened their grip on the automatic promotion race over the last couple of weeks, with Tony Mowbray’s side now five points and a game ahead of Bournemouth in second. 

A run of 26 points from 10 games from early November to mid-January certainly helped raise expectation levels around Ewood Park, converting Blackburn from play-off outsiders to automatic contenders. 

With 15 games left to play, Rovers will be hoping that they can turn their form around once again and will be looking to capitalise on any slip-ups from the current top two. 

Here, we take a look at two trends we are seeing with Blackburn this season…

Less possession, quicker build-up play 

Last season, Blackburn had the third-highest possession percentage in the Championship, with Rovers possessing lots of technical players who looked for the right time to break the lines. 

However, this is a stark contrast to this season, as the Lancashire club sit at the bottom of the possession statistics, averaging 42.4% of possession per game.

With Mowbray’s side still possessing a squad full of technical talent, there appears to be a clear emphasis on breaking the line quicker and becoming a side that threatens on the counter-attack. 

This is a reflection of a change of style, as opposed to a lack of quality.

The fortress that is Ewood Park

Blackburn’s push for an automatic spot has primarily come from their form on home soil this season.

Rovers have averaged 2.06 PPG at their Lancashire home this season, compared to 1.33 away from Ewood Park.
