11 places in Manchester we refuse to call by their 'proper' name

They are some of Manchester's most famous landmarks but still people seem to call them by the 'wrong' name.

Change is inevitable, even for some of the city's most prestigious and historic buildings. But whether it's a rebrand, or a completely different change of use, sometimes we just can't let go of the past.

In many cases, small fortunes have been spent by marketing departments and government bodies to change the official titles of their establishments only for us to still call it by anything but its new name.

Manchester of course is no exception, with several well-known places everyone seems to call by the 'wrong' name. Back in 2016, the M.E.N. compiled a list of some of these which we've now updated thrown in a couple more for good measure.

Below are 11 of the city's landmarks which stubbornly refuse to be known by their proper names. Of course this isn't a comprehensive list, so feel free to add any we've missed in the comments.

Better known as: Granada Studios

Manchester's £210m arts centre which opened its doors in June 2023 is known as Aviva Studios. The Factory International building, which will be the permanent home of the Manchester International Festival, will be sponsored by the insurance firm.

But the development will struggle to shake off its former life, built on the site of the old Granada Studios in the city centre. Opened in 1956, Granada Studios was the headquarters of Granada Television, later ITV Granada, were filming for hit shows such as Coronation Street were filmed until its closure in 2013.
