Not only Chopra and Sindhu, but other sporting stars – both present and former – of the country were having a ball at the 2021 TOISA. Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu couldn’t stop herself from hoisting the emcee of the event when she was challenged whether she could pull off the stunt. Peals of laughter echoed in the hall following Chanu’s act. The start of the day was full of excitement and anticipation, as the cream of Indian sports gathered under one roof to celebrate the best of 2021.

Baboo, an unemployed physical education graduate, won the event in 2 hours 36 minutes 34 seconds, bettering the earlier national record of 2:40.16, which was in the name of Haryana's Juned Khan who finished second on Tuesday with a time of 2:40.51. It is the fifth national record set at the Games, and the third in track and field events, after the women's and men's pole vault national marks by Rosy Meena Paulraj (Tamil Nadu) and Siva Subramaniam (Services) respectively. The other two national records were in weightlifting competition.
While Siva from Services soared over 5.31m to break his own national record set four years ago, Sambo, representing Arunachal Pradesh, lifted 198kg to break the Clean and Jerk national mark in 96kg men's weightlifting. Egged on by a seizable crowd at the IIT Gandhinagar, Siva Subramaniam first broke the National Games record, set at 5.10m by Vijay Pal Singh back in 1987, by clearing 5.11m. He then soared over 5.21m and asked for the bar to be raised at 5.31m, with an eye on the national record.
