LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Louisville Cardinals had the hometown advantage and won the most emotional set of Sunday's NCAA women's volleyball final. But Penn State won the other three sets and got the program's eighth national championship at the KFC Yum Center in downtown Louisville.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — At 12:56 a.m. Friday, minutes after Penn State pulled off a miraculous reverse sweep over No. 2 overall seed Nebraska in the NCAA women's volleyball tournament, head coach Katie Schumacher-Cawley was nowhere to be found. Three of her star players, Jess Mruzik, Caroline Jurevicius and Gillian Grimes, made their way to the news conference podium with big grins plastered on their faces. Mruzik, a team captain, said Schumacher-Cawley was right behind them and would join them shortly.
All season long, Pittsburgh and Nebraska seemed to be headed for an NCAA volleyball championship game collision. Pitt entered the tournament as the No. 1 overall seed after losing just one match during the regular season, against SMU, a team it had beaten soundly days earlier. Nebraska, the No. 2 seed, had lost just twice during the regular season after making it to the championship match in 2023. Both teams advanced to the final four. They were two wins away from the matchup that seemed preordained. But funny things happened in Louisville on Thursday night.
