DALLAS: The first 48-team World Cup has barely finished, but Gianni Infantino has already acknowledged the possibility that soccer’s biggest tournament could one day grow larger still, a move that could fundamentally alter the economics of the sport. Speaking to Swiss television during the tournament, the FIFA president said a 64-team World Cup was among the ideas that could be examined once the finals were over, reopening debate over how large the game’s showpiece event can realistically become. The logistical implications of another expansion are obvious. A bigger tournament would require more stadiums, more hotels, more transport and, most likely, more time. But the financial implications could prove even more significant.
UEFA bans Czech club MFK Karviná from European competitions over match-fixing
NYON: UEFA on Thursday banned Czech club MFK Karviná from European competitions next season because of their involvement in a domestic match-fixing scandal. Czech Cup winner Karviná were already expelled from the top division as punishment by the Czech Football Association on June 16. The association’s ethics committee also fined Karviná 10 million Czech koruna ($480,000) for offering bribes to two referees and two players to influence a league match and two relegation playoff games involving the club in 2024. The club did not appeal. By winning the Cup, Karviná advanced directly to the fourth qualifying round for the Europa League next season.
Somali ref Artan picked for showpiece UEFA game after being barred by US from World Cup
GENEVA: Somali referee Omar Artan who was barred by the United States from the World Cup was picked on Thursday for the showcase UEFA Super Cup game in August. European soccer body UEFA said Artan will referee the Aug. 12 game between Champions League winner Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa, the Europa League winner. The game will be in Salzburg, Austria. “Football is made to connect people and UEFA wants to show its respect to Omar and his outstanding officiating skills,” UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin said in a statement. Artan got a hero’s welcome returning to Somalia on Wednesday, days after he was refused entry in Miami and questioned for 11 hours by US authorities despite being picked by FIFA for World Cup duty. He was sent away on a flight to Turkiye.
