The first ever Chess Olympiad Torch, which was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 19 from Indira Gandhi Stadium in Delhi, will travel to 75 cities in 40 days before it culminates at Mahabalipuram in Tamil Nadu for the 44th Chess Olympiad, an official spokesman said.
The international chess body, FIDE, for the very first time has instituted the torch relay, which is part of the Olympic tradition but was never done in the Chess Olympiad. FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich handed over the torch to the prime minister who gave it to the legendary Viswanathan Anand. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to launch the first-ever Chess Olympiad Torch Relay for the 44th edition of the event on Sunday at the Indira Gandhi International Stadium in New Delhi. The inaugural edition of the Chess Olympiad Torch Relay will visit 75 cities across the country as the All India Chess Federation (AICF) revealed the route map on Friday. The International Chess Federation (FIDE) introduced an Olympic-style Torch Relay tradition for its Olympiad from this year's event and named India as the starting flame point for each edition, commemorating the popularity of chess in the country where the sport originated.
The 37-year-old’s shock decision comes just hours before the UEFA Nations League clash with Armenia, with Craig Gordon, Zander Clark, and Liam Kelly forming the three goalkeepers for the matchday squad.
For the first time ever an Olympic-style torch relay will be conducted ahead of the 44th Chess Olympiad, slated to be held in July-August near here. The torch relay will be a regular feature at the prestigious event from now onwards. It will always begin from India -- the birth place of chess -- and will travel across all continents before reaching the host city, the world governing body of the sport FIDE announced. The torch relay will, however, be run only in India this time due to paucity of time. The legendary Viswanathan Anand will be one of the participants.
