Virat Kohli will become just the 12th Indian to play 100 Tests when India take on Sri Lanka in the first of the two-match series at IS Bindra PCA stadium in Mohali. Overall, Virat will become just the 71st player in the history of Test cricket to go past the milestone. Since making his debut in Test cricket, almost 12 years ago in June 2010, against Zimbabwe in Harare, Kohli has not only established himself as one of best batters in the format but also one of the most successful skippers.
As Pakistan keep their deck under wraps, Pat Cummins is also keeping his playing cards hidden on the eve of Australia's first Test match in the country for 24 years.
Pat Cummins and Babar Azam on the eve of the match. Rain forced both teams to cancel their practice sessions Thursday, but the forecast is clear for Friday and most of Saturday, with showers likely on the last three days of play. Despite the weather, Cummins and Azam were geared up for the historic Test -- to be played in front of a sell-out 16,000 crowd in Rawalpindi, the garrison city just south of the capital, Islamabad. Australia haven't toured Pakistan since 1998 as security issues kept international teams from visiting, and as a result are unfamiliar with the local pitches. "It looks like a good wicket... as expected," Cummins told reporters on the eve of the match.
Kusal Mendis' hamstring injury continues to keep him out but wicketkeeper-batter Niroshan Dickwella is back after serving a one-year ban for a bio-bubble breach, Sri Lanka skipper Dimuth Karunaratne said on Thursday unveiling his line-up for the opening Test against India here. Both Dickwella and Mendis were banned for a year for breaching bio-bubble protocols during Sri Lanka's tour of England last year. Mendis' inclusion for this tour was subject to fitness following a hamstring injury during the fifth T20I against Australia. He did not play in the T20Is against India because of it. "Dickwella will be the wicketkeeper, (pacer) Dushmantha Chameera will be rested and will be available for the pink ball Test and Mendis has been ruled out," he said on the eve of the first Test, which would be India star Virat Kohli's 100th five-day match.
Virat Kohli over the past decade. From an overenthusiastic young lad who was running all over the place after winning the Under-19 World Cup title as captain in 2008 to ruling world cricket as one of the best batsmen of his generation, Virat's journey as a batsman has been nothing short of a fairytale. The wait for his next international century continues, but there is no cricket critic in the world who can question the former India captain's dedication.
Rohit Sharma on Thursday lauded former skipper and batting mainstay Virat Kohli ahead of his landmark 100th Test, saying he deserves all the credit for putting the team in a good position in the format. Rohit will start his Test captaincy journey when he steps out to lead India against Sri Lanka in the opening game here starting Friday. "As Test team, we stand in a good position. Whole credit goes to Virat for how we have been as a Test team. I have to take it from where he has left," Rohit said during the pre-match press-conference here.
But as the governing body of the sport, the ICC can only introduce measures, it is upto the teams and the players to make the game interesting, since it is totally another feeling to play in front of a boisterous crowd cheering for you, as the adrenaline rush raises the bar as far as the performances of the players are concerned.
