New York celebrated the career of Serena Williams in raucous fashion on Monday night but the party is not over thanks to her first-round victory against Danka Kovinic.
NEW YORK — Serena Williams' expected retirement will have to wait, for another two days at least. The 23-time major champion, who is playing the final Grand Slam of her 27-year career, won her first-round match, 6-3, 6-3, over Danka Kovinic at the US Open on Monday night.
Serena Williams said she is "staying vague" over her expected retirement from tennis after reaching the US Open second round on Monday. "I have been pretty vague about it, right? I'm going to stay vague because you never know," said the 40-year-old after beating Danka Kovinic 6-3, 6-3. Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam title winner, said earlier this month that she was "evolving away" from tennis and that "the countdown" was on for her retirement after 27 years as a professional.
The men's draw at the US Open got under way with a stunning upset for Greek fourth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas, who was bundled out by Colombian qualifier Daniel Elahi Galan 6-0, 6-1, 3-6, 7-5. Earlier, Russia's defending champion Daniil Medvedev routed Stefan Koslov of the United States in the top half of the draw. The Russian comfortably dispatched world No.111 Kozlov 6-2, 6-4, 6-0 in 2hrs 1min.
Serena Williams advanced to the second round of the US Open on an emotional night in New York in what is almost cetain to be the 23-time Grand Slam title winner's final tournament.
Playing in the main draw for the first time, Galan appeared right at home on tennis' biggest stage, claiming the first 11 games as Tsitsipas struggled to find any of his usual finesse and won just five of his service points in the first set. Tsitsipas had a physio tend to his right arm before the sixth game in the second set, when he finally got on the board, and again during the break before the third set, when he broke Galan in the second game.
