India opener Mayank Agarwal was run out in strange circumstances on Day 1 of the second Test against Sri Lanka at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. More than Mayank's mix-up with captain Rohit Sharma, it was Sri Lanka wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella's antics that added to the confusion of the events. Instead of taking the bails off at the first opportunity when Mayank was miles away from the crease, Dickwella insisted on taking a review. It was after he had made the 'T' gesture that he took the bails off to run Mayank out. Reacting to the turn of events, former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar said Dickwella's insistence on taking a review was "beyond understanding".
His counter-attacking knock put India in the driver's seat in the second Test against Sri Lanka and Shreyas Iyer asserted that batting with a defensive mind-set does not help on difficult wickets like the M Chinnaswamy track. Iyer's combative 92 under pressure guided India to 252 after the team was struggling at 126 for five. Batting fearlessly, Iyer charged down the wicket quite often, which he said was the best strategy to negate the spin. "My plan when I went out to bat was to cut down the spin (negate turn), so I decided to step out," Iyer told media after opening day's play.
Sri Lanka were 86 for 6 in reply to India's first innings total of 252 at stumps on the opening day of the second Test against Sri Lanka in Bengaluru on Saturday. Angelo Mathews top-scored for Sri Lanka with a 85-ball 43 while all other visiting batters struggled to get going. Niroshan Dickwella and Lasith Embuldeniya were batting on 13 and zero respectively at close of play. Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami took three and two wickets respectively while Axar Patel got one as Sri Lanka struggled throughout their first innings. Sri Lanka trail by 166 runs.
Shreyas Iyer missed his second Test century by 8 runs but Twitter hailed his breathtaking knock on Day 1 of the second Test in Bengaluru as the best of his Test career. The right-handed batter slammed 92 off just 98 balls on a Chinnaswamy pitch that had a lot of assistance of spinners. Coming in to bat with the team in a spot of bother at 86/4 at the dismissal of Virat Kohli, Shreyas at first settled down to try and get a partnership together. He stitched together a 40-run stand with Rishabh Pant but after Pant's dismissal and with wickets falling regularly around him, Shreyas decided to take on the bowling.

Mayank got himself in a bit of a tangle and the ball appeared to have hit his pad first. The Sri Lankans went up in a big appeal but the umpire did not seem convinced. While all this was happening, Mayank tried to sneak in a single without noticing that Praveen Jayawickrama, who was moving in from point to covers, had almost collected the ball. Rohit at the other end sent Mayank back but the right-hander had charged too far down the wicket. Jayawickrama just lobbed it back towards Sri Lanka keeper Niroshan Dickwella with Mayank having no chance to return to the crease on time.

The match is a day-night affair and India will look to clean sweep the visitors, having won the first Test in Mohali by an innings and 222 runs. India have won both of their home day/night Tests -- against Bangladesh and England, respectively -- and will look to make that three against the Lankans, who are the only team to win an away pink-ball Test. Ravindra Jadeja climbed to the top of the ICC player Test rankings for all-rounders with a sparkling performance against Sri Lanka in the opening Test in Mohali. The 33-year-old was plain brilliant with both the bat and ball as India thrashed Sri Lanka by an innings and 222 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. After his all-round heroics, the Sri Lankan team will already be wary of Jadeja and his record in Bengaluru will be making them even more nervous.
