The Commonwealth Games must be "modern and edgy" to stay relevant to a young audience, according to federation chief Katie Sadleir, who praised 2022 host city Birmingham for an "outstanding job". The 57-year-old former synchronised swimmer said the Games must show how "they are different and individual" from other events in a cluttered sporting calendar.
Star paddler Sharath Kamal and world champion boxer Nikhat Zareen have been named India's flagbearers during the closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games here on Monday. The 40-year-old Sharath has a rich haul of four medals in this edition of the Games, having won the men's team and mixed team gold and a silver in the men's doubles event. Leandro Lo, one of Brazil's greatest jiu-jitsu champions of all time, was fatally shot in a Sao Paulo club on Sunday, his family's lawyer said. Lo was allegedly shot by an off-duty police officer who is now on the run, the BBC reported quoting local police. The fighter was rushed to a local hospital where he was declared brain dead, the outlet further said in its report. Lo won International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) world titles in five different weight classes from 2012 to 2022 - an all-time record.

A 62-year-old French sailor has been rescued in the Atlantic Ocean off Spain after surviving for 16 hours in a tiny air bubble under his capsized sailboat, the Spanish coastguard said Thursday. Laurent Camprubi fired a flare after his boat, the Jeanne Solo Sailor, ran into trouble at around 8:30 pm on Monday when it was 14 miles (22 kilometres) from the Sisargas Islands off Spain's northwestern Galicia region, the coastguard said in a statement.

Rajya Sabha on Wednesday took up a bill that seeks to provide an independent mechanism for anti-doping adjudication and legal sanctity to anti-doping agencies. The National Anti-Doping Bill, which was passed by Lok Sabha last week, seeks to provide a statutory framework in the form of legislation for the prohibition of doping in sports in the country. Introducing the bill for discussion and passage in the Upper House, Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Anurag Thakur said it intends to accomplish building institutional capabilities in anti-doping, enable the hosting of major sporting events, protect rights of all sportspersons, ensure time-bound justice to athletes and enhance cooperation among agencies in fighting doping in sports.
