Tears, Defiance As Ukraine Paralympics Team Honour Country's Fallen

Ukrainian Winter Paralympians wept and pumped their fists in the air in defiance against Russia's invasion of their homeland during a moment's silence at the Athletes' Village on Thursday. On day six of the Beijing Winter Paralympics the team held a solemn ceremony to call for peace and honour their fallen countrymen and women, during a break from training commitments as well as cross-country skiing and biathlon races. The United Nations estimates about 2.2 million Ukrainian refugees have fled the country, calling it Europe's fastest-growing refugee crisis since World War II.

Let's Talk About Sex: Argentine Paralympian Breaks Taboo

Athletes at Beijing's Winter Paralympics are not just breaking down sports barriers on the slopes and ice -- Argentinian skier Enrique Plantey is pushing for a bedroom revolution. The 39-year-old and his non-disabled Spanish girlfriend Triana Serfaty have published a practical guidebook called "Sexistimos" -- a nod to the Spanish term for "we exist" -- about disability and sex. They hope it sparks an open conversation on what is a difficult topic for many. "People are afraid to talk openly about it," Plantey, who is a paraplegic, told AFP.

Beijing Winter Paralympics: Slushy Snow And T-Shirts As Spring Approaches

Cross-country skiers ploughed through slushy snow wearing T-shirts on day five of the Beijing Winter Paralympics Wednesday as spring-like weather pushed temperatures well above freezing. The warm spell caught some athletes off guard on the largely man-made snow at the Zhangjiakou cross-country event where six gold medals were up for grabs. Competitors in the Olympics last month had battled blizzard conditions and a brutal wind chill, with some events postponed because of the weather. This time it was the opposite problem.  Cross-country skier Birgit Skarstein, who competes in the women's sitting category, likened the weather to July back home in Norway as temperatures in nearby Zhangjiakou city nudged a balmy 17 degrees Celsius (63 Fahrenheit).

Russian, Belarusian Athletes Banned From Winter Paralympics

Russian and Belarusian athletes were on Thursday banned from the Beijing Winter Paralympics over the war in Ukraine, with organisers bowing to international pressure and threats of a boycott. The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) had just a day earlier said athletes from the two countries would be allowed to compete as "neutrals" in the Games, which start on Friday. It said that was the "harshest punishment" the IPC could dish out under its rules.
