Top Shot Putter Karanveer Singh, Discus Thrower Kirpal Singh Among Sportspersons Handed Bans By NADA

India's top shot putter Karanveer Singh and discus thrower Kirpal Singh were among several athletes across sports who were handed bans for four years by the National Anti-Doping Agency's (NADA) Disciplinary panel. Karanveer and Kirpal were handed four year bans by the Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel (ADDP) of the NADA in its order on December 29, 2023. The NADA issued the list of the athletes who were handed bans by the panel only on Thursday. Kirpal's ban period began on July 7, 2023, while Karanveer will serve his ban from July 26, 2023. Both were among around 20 athletes from across sports whose provisional suspensions were revealed by the NADA in July last year.

Khelo India Winter Games 2024: Skaters Put Maharashtra On Top; Army Denies ITBP Ice-Hockey Double

Maharashtra finished on top of the medal standings as the first part of the Khelo India Winter Games 2024 came to a rapturous finish at the Nawang Dorjay Stobdan Sports Complex in Leh on Tuesday. Maharashtra won 20 skating medals that included six golds. Karnataka also finished with six golds but their total count of eight as against Maharashtra's 20, relegated them to the Number 2 position in the standings. Hosts Ladakh, who won a pair of historic Khelo India golds in speed skating, finished third with a combined haul of 13 medals. The UT of Ladakh hosted the Khelo India Winter Games for the first time. Leh hosted two sports – ice hockey and speed skating. Part 2 of KIWG has been scheduled in Gulmarg, Jammu & Kashmir from February 21-25. Gulmarg will stage four sports.

Paris Olympics Chief Tony Estanguet Says He Faces Legal Probe Over Pay

Paris Olympics chief organiser Tony Estanguet on Tuesday confirmed that French investigators had opened a legal probe into his pay, six months before the Games begin. Estanguet, who was attending the opening of a swimming pool in suburban Paris, was responding to a report on AFP earlier in the day that the investigation, by magistrates specialising in financial crimes, began "last week". "I learned this morning that there would be an investigation," said the triple Olympic canoeing champion.

Paris Olympics Medals To Contain 'Piece Of Eiffel Tower'

The medals awarded at this year's Paris Olympics and Paralympics will feature a hexagon-shaped piece of iron taken from the original Eiffel Tower in their centre, organisers said as they unveiled their design on Thursday. All 5,084 gold, silver and bronze medals for the Paris Games will feature the six-edged metal medallion which will be set like a gemstone under a design by elite French jewellery house Chaumet. "We wanted to offer to all medal-winners at the Paris Olympics and Paralympics a piece of the Eiffel Tower from 1889," said the head of the local organising committee, Tony Estanguet.

Two-time Asian Games medallist Naorem Roshibina Devi was on Tuesday named International Wushu Federation's (IWUF) female athlete of the year in sanda category after a month-long public voting. The 23-year-old Roshibina, who won a bronze and a silver in the 2018 and 2022 Asian Games, polled 93545 votes to beat Shahrbano Mansouriyan Semiromi (88179) of Iran and Wu Xiaowei (46753) of China. Roshibina had lost to Xiaowei in the women's 60kg Wushu sanda event final at the Hangzhou Asian Games last year. After the IWUF Athletes Committee's preliminary evaluation, 45 candidates from 23 countries and regions entered in the public voting in various categories, said the IWUF, which announced the results on Tuesday.
