Two southern states - Telangana and Karnataka - stole the honours when a pair of speed skating gold medals were decided on Day 2 of the Khelo India Winter Games 2025 in Leh on Friday. Telangana's 15-year-old Nayana Sri Talluri won the first gold medal of KIWG 2025 and completed a 'hattrick' when she sped to the women's 500m short track gold at the NDS Stadium. Nayana, who had won the same medal in the under-17 category last year, was an emphatic winner, clocking 1:01.35 seconds, leaving in her wake the skaters from Karnataka and Maharashtra. She has won in KIWG 2023 in Gulmarg.

Pranav Madav Surapaneni won Telangana's second gold in the Khelo India Winter Games' ice-skating competition but all attention on Saturday was on the blockbuster ice-hockey league match between Indian Army and ITBP in which the latter prevailed. With about 10 minutes left on the clock, Stanzin Mingure scored twice in succession to script a dramatic 3-1 victory for ITBP as Army's defence collapsed in the third and final period of the contest.

Khelo India Winter Games: 428 Athletes From 19 Teams To Take Part In 5-Day Meet

The Khelo India Winter Games (KIWG) 2025 that starts on Thursday will feature 428 athletes from 19 competing teams. Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, set to declare the games open in Leh on Thursday. Nineteen teams, comprising states, Union Territories, and institutional outfits, will compete over five days across two events – ice hockey and ice skating – marking the first part of KIWG 2025. A traditional Ladakhi-style opening ceremony has been planned to welcome 594 participants, including 428 athletes.
