It was the Akash Madhwal show at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Wednesday as the young fast bowler picked up five wickets to guide Mumbai Indians to victory over Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 Eliminator. The figures of 5/5 in 3.3 overs was enough to put him in an elite list comprising of massive names like Anil Kumble and Jasprit Bumrah. However, just four years ago, Madhwal was playing tennis ball cricket and had never touched a red ball.
After Royal Challengers Bangalore's exit from IPL 2023, former player of the franchise Chris Gayle shared a reel on social media. In the clip, Gayle could be seen mourning about Virat Kohli and Co. failing to enter the playoffs with the Bollywood song 'Apun Jaise Tapori' from the movie 'Munna Bhai MBBS' running in background. Notably, Gayle played 142 IPL matches scoring 4965 at an average close to 40 and a strike rate of almost 150. He continues to hold the record for scoring the highest runs (175 not out) in a single inning of IPL. He played for RCB from 2011 to 2017.
Sunrisers Hyderabad ended their IPL 2023 campaign with an eight-wicket defeat against Mumbai Indians on Sunday. The 2016 champions had a forgetful outing in this season, with only four victories in 14 matches. Despite having many big names like Aiden Markram, Mayank Agarwal, Glenn Phillips, SRH failed to leave a mark and finished at the bottom of the points table. Apart from them, one player who turned out to be a major disappointment this year was pacer Umran Malik. The Jammu and Kashmir speedster emerged as a superstar in 2022 but gave a completely opposite performance this year.
Despite having a shaky start to their campaign, Mumbai Indians made it to the Playoffs of IPL 2023 on Sunday. The five-time champions defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad by eight wickets in a high-scoring match at Wankhede, where Cameron Green brought up his maiden IPL century. Later in the day, Gujarat Titans defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore, which paved the way for MI into the Playoffs. Shubman Gill turned out to be the star for GT as his blistering ton put Virat Kohli's hundred in vain.
Mumbai Indians had a day to remember on Sunday as they registered a comfortable eight-wicket victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad in their last league stage match. However, the main reason of happiness came after Gujarat Titans defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore in the second match on Sunday, which paved way for the five-time champions into the Playoffs of IPL 2023. MI, who have now qualified with a total of 16 points, were dependent on GT's win over RCB. The team erupted in joy to celebrate their entry into the knockout stage of the tournament.
Sunrisers Hyderabad batter Vivrant Sharma made the record of the highest score on debut in the Indian Premier League (IPL) by an Indian player, breaking a 15-year-old record. Hailing from Jammu and Kashmir, Vivrant Sharma achieved the milestone against Mumbai Indians in Wankhede Stadium on Sunday. Sunrisers Hyderabad set a target of 200 for the loss of five wickets. Sharma contributed 69 runs off 47 balls, which consisted of nine fours and two sixes.
The Indian Premier League 2023 season hasn't seen the Umran Malik that fans wanted. The express pacer didn't impress the way he did last season for Sunrisers Hyderabad, owing to inconsistent shows, coupled with a dip in bowling speed as well. Ahead of the Sunriers' final league game of the season against Mumbai Indians, Umran was asked about his views on the way this season went for him. The young speedster said that he didn't get to bowl as consistently as he did last season for the franchise.
