Brendan Rodgers resigns as Celtic manager

LONDON: Brendan Rodgers resigned as Celtic manager on Monday, the club announced, after the Scottish giants’ lacklustre start to the season. The club said former boss Martin O’Neill and former player Shaun Maloney would take charge of the team until a permanent successor is appointed. Rodgers’ second spell at Celtic ended after Sunday’s 3-1 Scottish Premiership defeat at Hearts left them eight points adrift of the Edinburgh side. “Football manager Brendan Rodgers has today tendered his resignation” and “will leave his role with immediate effect,” Celtic said in a statement. “Brendan leaves with our thanks for the role he has played during a period of continued success for the club and we wish him further success in the future.” The club added that the search for a replacement was already underway. “We are pleased that during this interim period former Celtic manager, Martin O’Neill and former Celtic player, Shaun Maloney have agreed to take charge of Celtic first-team matters,” it said. Rodgers, 52, returned for a second spell at Celtic Park in 2023, winning successive titles, to add to his league triumphs from 2017 and 2018. He previously managed Swansea, Liverpool and Leicester and arrived at Celtic for the second time in June 2023 to succeed Ange Postecoglou. The Northern Irishman had been at Celtic between May 2016 and February 2019, completing successive league and cup trebles. His first season in charge saw Celtic finish with a record 106 points and become the first Scottish side to complete a top-flight season undefeated since 1899. Rodgers continued Celtic’s domestic supremacy by winning league titles in the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons and also lifted the Scottish Cup and the Scottish League Cup. But clouds were

Atletico win at Betis to bounce back from Arsenal drubbing

SEVILLE, Spain: Atletico Madrid earned a solid 2-0 win at Real Betis on Monday to move fourth in La Liga and bounce back from their Champions League thrashing by Arsenal. Diego Simeone’s side lost 4-0 last week in north London but put that defeat behind them with a strong display at La Cartuja stadium, where Betis are playing on a temporary basis. They were able to record only their second clean sheet in their last nine games across all competitions and their first away win of the season. The coach’s son Giuliano Simeone opened the scoring with Alex Baena netting the second before half-time. “This is an important win, hard-fought, and I’m happy,” Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak told Movistar. “I hope we continue like this, away from home, not just at home...

Lyon leave it late to beat 10-man Strasbourg in Ligue 1

LYON: Afonso Moreira scored a spectacular last-minute winner to hand Lyon a valuable 2-1 home victory in Ligue 1 against 10-man Strasbourg on Sunday. Liam Rosenior’s youthful side took the lead at the Groupama Stadium through Joaquin Panichelli before Ismael Doukoure turned through his own net and then received a straight red card for a dangerous tackle. Lyon captain Corentin Tolisso missed a first-half penalty for the hosts as it seemed the chance for them to go into the top four had gone begging. However, substitute Moreira’s late heroics sent Lyon fourth on 18 points, while Strasbourg sit seventh, two points behind their opponents. “It was important to win after the last two matches .

Mbappé and Bellingham score in tense clasico as Madrid wins 2-1 to end losing run against Barcelona

MADRID: Real Madrid finally ended its recent struggles against Barcelona in a tense clasico which saw players confronting each other after the final whistle. Kylian Mbappé and Jude Bellingham scored as Madrid beat Barcelona 2-1 in the first clasico of the season on Sunday, halting a four-game losing streak against the Catalan rival. The victory increased Madrid’s league lead over Barcelona to five points after 10 rounds. There was a scuffle between the bench players from both teams after Barcelona’s Pedri was sent off just before the final whistle. The altercation continued after the game ended, with Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior and Barcelona star forward Lamine Yamal — who was successfully contained by Madrid defenders during the match — among those involved. “It was the moment and the tension from both teams,” Madrid coach Xabi Alonso said.

Morocco’s Under-20 World Cup winners welcomed home by large crowds

RABAT: The Moroccan team were greeted by thousands of fans in Rabat on Wednesday for a parade to celebrate their historic victory in the Under-20 World Cup last week. Morocco became the first Arab country to win the tournament with a 2-0 triumph over favorites Argentina in Sunday’s final in Chilean capital Santiago. Before the parade, Moroccan Crown Prince Moulay Hassan presided over a ceremony in honor of the team at the royal palace. The players were then driven through the streets of Rabat on an open-top bus, to the delight of jubilant supporters and to the sound of vuvuzelas. “It’s a great achievement, they filled us with joy and waved our country’s flag high,” Youssef, a 34-year-old salesman, told AFP. Yassir Zabiri, who plays for Famalicao in Portugal, scored twice in the final to end the tournament as the joint top-scorer with five goals. “The future of our football is in good hands.
