Fighting a troubled past, judoka Tulika Maan repays mother’s lifelong sacrifices

It was 3:30 am India time on Thursday night, when Amrita’s phone whirred to life in Delhi’s Tagore Garden. It wasn’t a startle, the assistant sub-inspector (ASI) with the Delhi Police was expecting it. What she didn’t expect were the sniffles at the other end. Daughter Tulika’s voice was trembling and the only utterance which her mother could hear properly was, ‘Maaf kar dena, gold nahi la payi (Forgive me for not bringing the gold).’

Commonwealth Games is nothing short of sensational. With the long list for the Games was decided a year ago, Tulika was not even considered for selection as she could "hardly move". "When the probables were decided a year ago, she was not among the players picked. She brought her weight down to 85kg from 115kg to get into shape. She weighs about 89-90kg at the moment,'' said coach Jiwan Sharma, who is here with the Indian judo contingent, in a chat with PTI.

Day 6 of the ongoing Commonwealth Games was another fruitful outing for the Indian contingent as they managed to silver and bronze medals to their kitty. High jumper Tejaswin Shankar ended up winning the bronze medal while judoka Tulika Maan clinched the silver medal. Squash star Saurav Ghoshal also took home the bronze medal after defeating England's James Willstrop.

But her tenacious spirit and fighting skills shine throughIt was so close yet so far for judoka Tulika Maan. The 23-year-old from Tagore Gardens in Delhi, was leading and looked in control in the initial stages against the defending champion Sarah Adlington of Scotland in the 78+kg final. But a quick twist of fate found her landing on her back that resulted in a pin which gave the 'Ippon' and the gold medal to Adlington here on Wednesday.

Commonwealth Games here on Wednesday. Tulika, who won two fights earlier in the day to make it to the final, led for majority of the bout before Adlington pulled off a decisive move, an Ippon, to win gold. Adlington had Tulika on the mat with a forceful throw and the Indian landed on her back, ending the contest with 30 seconds remaining. A silver was still a creditable performance from the 23-year-old from Delhi who gave India its third judo medal in the Birmingham Games.
