Tokyo Olympics silver-medallist Mirabai Chanu all but qualified for the 2024 Paris Games after she finished third in the women's 49kg Group B event of the IWF World Cup on Monday. Returning from a six-month injury lay off, Chanu lifted a total of 184kg (81kg+103kg) at the tournament, which is the final and a mandatory qualifier for the Paris Olympics. "It feels incredible to come back after an injury. Almost every lift I made today felt clean, clear, and powerful, and I'm leaving this competition feeling strong and confident," Chanu said.
Injured Mirabai Chanu's return to the weightlifting arena has been further delayed as the Olympic silver medallist is set to miss the Asian Championships in February next year. Chanu, who competes in the 49kg weight class, is still recovering from the hip tendinitis injury she sustained in October while competing at the Asian Games. The former world champion, who did not lift any weight at the ongoing IWF Grand Prix II, was earlier targeting to get fit by the Asian Championships, scheduled to take place from February 3 to 10 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
Recuperating from the hip injury she suffered during the Asian Games, star Indian lifter Mirabai Chanu is targeting a return to action in the Asian Championships next year. This means like in the World Championships in September, she will only mark her attendance by completing the necessary formalities in the next Olympic qualifying event, which is the IWF Grand Prix II in Doha from December 4 to 14. She will not be lifting the barbell. The Olympic silver medallist, who had sustained the injury last month while competing at the Hangzhou Games, has been diagnosed with hip tendinitis.
