The first day of the one-off Test against England turned memorable for Indian cricket, specially women's cricket, as the team made its way into record books, becoming the second team to score over 400 runs in a single day. They joined England who had made the record way back in 1935. India's score of 410/7 at stumps came on the back of scintillating half-centuries by four players and three big partnerships. India were 410/7 at the end of day's play with Deepti Sharma (60) and Pooja Vastrakar (4) unbeaten at the crease. With the Indian women's team lacking enough red-ball exposure, vice-captain Smriti Mandhana said her young teammates are picking the brains of new head coach Amol Muzumdar to get into red-ball mindset ahead of the one-off Test against England. Two years ago, India had played a couple of Tests in England and Australia in June and September with both the four-day games ending in draws. In comparison, England have had a more recent experience of playing red-ball cricket as their last game was against Australia in the Women's Ashes in June this year.

India vice-captain Smriti Mandhana on Tuesday welcomed the idea of organising a World Test Championship in women's Test cricket, but England veteran Tammy Beaumont said it would be unfair to have such a competition when only three countries are playing regularly. In men's Test cricket, the ICC's World Test Championship began with 2019-2021 as the first two-year cycle. It is currently in its third edition. The women's game, however, does not have any such competition. There is a huge disparity among women's teams in terms of playing Test cricket as only England, Australia and India have played in the longest format regularly even though there is a long gap.

Indian all-rounder Deepti Sharma has refrained from blaming the pitch for their shoddy batting performance, saying the wicket was not as challenging as they made it appear to be during the second women's T20I against England in Mumbai. The hosts, who lost the opening T20I by 38 runs, were shot out for a mere 80 in 16.2 overs on Saturday night. India went on to lose the game as well as the series here at the Wankhede Stadium, though they did put up an inspirational show with the ball, taking six wickets during England's chase of a paltry 81-run target.
